الوصف
“Because of the constant flow of news and images that evoke tears, we tend to forget, much like dogs lying on a hot tin roof. We jump up whenever it heats up beneath us, only to return and lie on it when it cools, seeking comfort without exploring other options. I am just a number, nearly insignificant in this frightening world. The subject is complicated, and I prefer not to discuss it further, Sabri. My goal is simply to avoid falling into madness, so I look away. As a human, I choose the simple path amid the overwhelming complexities around us.”

After the death of his wife, Kurdish-Syrian immigrant Swar Sheikho builds a solitary life in the Netherlands, determined never to remarry. Yet despite his independence, he remains haunted by grief, old loves, childhood memories, and unanswered questions about human nature.
While pursuing a new career opportunity, Swar navigates Dutch society through friendships, job interviews, and cultural encounters that challenge many of the assumptions he brought from his homeland. His closest companion is Sabri, a lifelong friend whose failing marriage prompts both men to reflect on freedom, loyalty, and the sacrifices demanded by family and tradition.
As Swar revisits memories of his late wife, Hano, and a painful, lost connection with Shepol, he becomes increasingly preoccupied with understanding the contradictions that govern love and desire.
His search for answers takes an unexpected turn when he meets Petra, a married Dutch woman whose husband suffers from sexual impotence. Petra openly pursues relationships outside her marriage with her husband’s knowledge and support, yet insists that her love for him has only deepened because of their arrangement. Intrigued and unsettled, Swar enters Petra’s world hoping to understand the unusual bond that holds the couple together.
The deeper Swar becomes involved, the more elusive the truth appears. His encounters with Petra challenge his ideas about fidelity, intimacy, and commitment. At the same time, memories from childhood, including an early experience witnessing a secret relationship between two young women, continue to shape his understanding of sexuality and human behavior.
When Swar finally comes face-to-face with Petra’s husband, he expects answers. Instead, he encounters only further mystery. The novel ends not with certainty but with ambiguity, forcing Swar—and the reader—to confront a central question: must every human relationship be understood, judged, or explained?
Does It Really Matter? is a literary novel about immigration, widowhood, friendship, sexuality, and the search for meaning in a world where people rarely conform to the stories we tell ourselves about them.
